Mechanics as a Lived Experience
This is an explanation of how THOUGHT creates feeling
EXPLANATION
(includes video and flipchart below)
Our experience is made of thought, 100% of the time
And we experience that thought (brought to life by consciousness) in our bodies
In fact any emotion we experience is a result of our thought brought into our awareness
When we are in the zone or the flow we are experiencing our wisdom, common sense and insight which tend to feel light and clear.
If we get caught up in thoughts that look real or outside-in, like something ‘out there’ can impact on my wellbeing (good or bad) we experience that as emotions. For example our anxious thinking creates feelings of anxiety, our stressed thinking creates feelings of stress, our happy thinking creates happy emotions. All of these feelings are made up of our thinking about a situation, not the situation itself. The system is telling us what’s going on in our thinking - it’s nudging our awareness.
If we notice that our feelings are an indication of where our thoughts are going we start to realise that we don’t need to change the situation to change our feelings and instead we see their source is thought, which is transient and will change.
How to share this
Use blank ‘head’ with a star for the outside world and a ‘bubble’ of consciousness
Ask people if star is going on in the outside world, but they are thinking square - what will they experience?
Illustrate with a ‘thought’ square in the bubble.
Show the system :
Mind is powering it (body and mind)
Consciousness is where we are aware of our thoughts
Thoughts flow by all the time - powered by mind so intrinsically intelligent
Ask what happens when we experience something? We feel it…
Either as an emotion or a sensation - show this link from the mind to the body.
Everything we think, we experience. For example think about your feet… what happens?
You feel them - even though they existed a moment ago but you didn’t.
Acknowledge that there is an outside world and at times we are experiencing that, because that’s what we are thinking about.
Highlight that it looks like there is a link between outside world and our feelings - but it isn’t true!
LINK – We feel our thinking, not our circumstances. Which means we don’t need to change our circumstances for our feelings to change.
